Ernst Pepping (1901–1981) is regarded as one of the most important contemporary Protestant church musicians and composers. In addition to the sacred choral works which are central to his compositional output, he also wrote secular vocal works such as “As ik hier dit Jaar weer” in Plattdeutsch. This is a song cycle set to texts by Klaus Groth which was completed in 1946, one year after the Paul Gerhard song book.
