“Idomeneo” K. 366 was first performed on 29 January 1781 at the Cuvilliés Theatre in Munich. It was Mozart’s second opera for the Munich court, which was preceded by the opera buffa “La finta giardiniera”, composed in 1775.
“Idomeneo” is based on Antoine Danchet’s “Idoménée“, which was transformed into a libretto as per written instructions in a document referred to as the “plan”. The document was unfortunately lost, but discussed in correspondence between Mozart and his father.

This vocal score contains an appendix with markings and amendments for the premiere performance in Munich as well as the 1786 Vienna revision.

Suggestions for cadenzas and the embellishment of fermatas in the vocal parts have been rendered as footnotes.
