Realizing that not all of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos were specially written for the 1721 collection, Klaus Hofmann has reconstructed this quintet version of the Second Concerto. The insignificance of the concerto's tutti strings, and obvious compositional compromises in its ripieno passages, strongly suggest that they were added at a later date. With its formal rigor and transparent timbre, Hofmann's reconstruction brings out the colors of the solo instruments to produce a welcome addition to the chamber music repertoire.
