Variations were one of the most popular genres of chamber music in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many famous composers arranged the most popular melodies of their day into cycles of variations for a variety of instrumental combinations. This is the tradition which inspired the present arrangement for flute & piano of Mozart's beloved piano variations on the French song "Ah, vous dirai-je Maman". It is a charming and colourful addition to the small repertoire of original works for flute and piano by Mozart.
