Our original edition of the Piano Sonatas op. 27 which includes the famous “Moonlight Sonata” (BA 10853, € 11.95) has now been made available for the Beethoven Anniversary Year 2020 in a limited print run with a special price of only € 3.00.

At the dawn of the 19th century Beethoven struck out on new paths with his two opus 27 sonatas, each of which he called a “sonata quasi una fantasia”. Both of them, in particular the second sonata later, nicknamed the “Moonlight Sonata”, were destined for immortality.

Why present a new Urtext edition of Beethoven’s piano sonatas? The answer lies in the uncompromisingly precise editorial work of Jonathan Del Mar. This Urtext edition of the two Sonatas op. 27 offers a musical text that meets the highest scholarly demands as well as the practical needs of performers. Along with a correction in the third movement of op. 27 no. 1 (the 1st eighth note in the right hand is a C, not a C-flat as noted in other Urtext editions and even corrected as such in Brahms’ personal copy), the musical text is presented in a reader-friendly layout with practical page turns. The detailed Critical Commentary offers information and explanations regarding alternative readings and all editorial decisions.
