The unusual combination of instruments required for Dvorak's Terzetto in C major (2 violins, viola) suggests that this was intended as an occasional composition. Dvorak never underestimated amateur musicians and lovers of home music-making. He was prepared to write undemanding pieces for them which, alongside his important chamber works, provide a similar testimony of the composer's mastery and his inexhaustible wealth of invention.
