Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) composed the volume of seven songs entitled Gypsy Songs, Op. 55, for the excellent German tenor Gustav Walter (1834-1910), a member of the Wiener Hofoper (Vienna Court Opera). He thus wrote them to the German translations of poems adapted for him by their author, Czech poet Adolf Hejduk. The original Simrock edition from 1880 only came with a text in German; a further edition from 1881 now contained Czech and English versions. The songs proved to be extremely popular with singers and audiences alike; the fourth one ("Songs my mother taught me") became one of the most famous of its kind in the world repertoire. In this volume, the songs are transposed for upper voices (soprano/tenor). The vocal text is here published in its Czech, English and German versions.  This title was published as part of the Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.
