The Dumka, originally a Ukrainian or Polish epic folk song combining melancholy and exalted joyfulness, was a popular theme among Slav composers. In the piano and chamber oeuvre of Antonin Dvorak we will come across several examples of its musical stylisation. The piano trio Dumky, Op. 90 comprises six independent short movements betraying the characteristic mood of the Dumka, which contain a wealth of different themes. Dvorak completed the manuscript of the score in February 1891, and the piece was first performed that same year at a celebration to mark the honorary doctorate bestowed upon the composer by Charles University. The cycle is one of his most popular and most performed chamber works. The pocket score is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.
