Quintet in G major for two violins, viola, cello and double bass is the product of Dvorak's early compositional endeavours; the work was attributed a high opus number by the publisher Simrock later on. The quintet was written in 1875 as an entry for a chamber music competition. Dvorak's work went on to win this competition, held by the music division of the artists' society "Umelecka beseda". While editing the work in preparation for publication in 1888, the composer subjected the original five-movement version of the quintet to careful revision and left out one slow movement. The title is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.
