Quintet in A major for two violins, viola, cello and piano, Op. 5 was completed in 1872, thus it dates from a time when Dvorak, after a period of keen interest in German Neo-Romantic music, gradually worked his way towards a more tranquil expression of his own. The whereabouts of the original version of the Quintet from 1872 is unknown. The critical edition of this work from Dvorak's youth presents the piece in its final version which the composer wrote fifteen years later after thorough revision, during which he reduced his original score considerably. This title is part of the first Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak.<br>
