The Graduale published here is an early work probably written during the 1870s for the Feast celebrated on 2 February. The composer reveals his interest in a reformed church music, abandoning the vocal-instrumental style of the Baroque and Classical periods, and presenting a new a cappella format.

The Graduale has a special magic, reminiscent of the tender beauty of a hothouse flower, in common with the group of compositions from Janacek’s first development period.
