The male chorus with soprano solo set to the words by R. Thákur is a ballad about a man who searches his whole life with deranged tenacity for a stone which transforms ordinary things to gold. One day a village boy asks him where he came to the gold chain that hangs around his neck. The madman remembers: the chain was iron, he must have touched it with the gold-making stone without knowing! The piece is rather difficult to perform for its three-octave range. It was premiered by the Moravian Teachers’ choir two years after its completion in 1924.
