Concerto for Viola and Orchestra was written in the years 2003-2004. It was first performed in Dijon, France (Grand Auditorium) on 7 February 2007 (Raphaël Oleg - viola, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, cond. Vladimír Válek). The work was instigated by the composer's friend of many years, musicologist Pierre-E. Barbier, to whom the work is also dedicated. According to the composer, the chief aim of this approximately half-hour composition, which is arranged into three movements, is not a technical display, but the application of a whole range of expressive qualities in both the solo instrument and the symphony orchestra. The composer considered this piece as his most important concertante work.
